---ENG: “The sea is an infinite training ground, a teacher both stern and generous. (…) And it is precisely from the sea that one of the most extraordinary sporting adventures of the twentieth century was born, one that continues to this day: the Capri-Naples, the ‘Marathon of the Sea’, thirty-six kilometers of effort and wonder that for over seventy years have inextricably linked two pearls of the Mediterranean and two souls with the same passion.” These words are from the president of the Italian Swimming Federation, Paolo Barelli, and are contained in the preface to the book “I giganti del mare” (The Giants of the Sea), written by Franco Esposito and Marco Lobasso and published by LeVarie (160 pages, 16 euros, available in bookstores and online bookshops). The volume, which recounts the sixty editions of the most famous open water swimming race in the world, promoted annually by Luciano Cotena's company Eventualmente Eventi & Comunicazione, was presented yesterday, Wednesday, December 17, in the halls of the Circolo Canottieri Napoli.
The book, as explained by those present, collects and recounts the epic feats of the race, which was first held in 1954 and, after an eleven-year hiatus, resumed in 2003. It also features anecdotes and curiosities about a competition that has shaped the history of the two cities involved, Capri and Naples. Among the legendary feats is undoubtedly that of Arianna Bridi, the record-breaking winner of the 2020 edition (6:04:26), who also beat her male colleagues in the 36-kilometer swim: "I still remember," she told the Circolo Canottieri, "that in the water I didn't understand why my coach was telling me the men's positions. I only realized I had beaten them after crossing the finish line. The most beautiful thing? Seeing my idol, Gregorio Paltrinieri, jump and celebrate my feat."
The proceedings were introduced by Giancarlo Bracale, president of the club and of the Campania FIN committee. This was followed by a speech by the national president of the Italian Sports Press Union, Gianfranco Coppola, author of the afterword, who emphasized "the role of journalists, who recount the emotions of sport." Luciano Cotena, organizer of the Capri-Napoli race and promoter of the volume, emphasized how "this book is a tribute to the protagonists of the sixty editions held so far." He also noted that an appendix is dedicated to the protagonists of the open events, open to athletes and amateurs who can experience the thrill of crossing the gulf. This emotion was also described by two Neapolitan athletes who completed the Capri-Napoli race, Fabiana Lamberti and Giuseppe Ilario. Closing the evening, one of the authors, Marco Lobasso, conveyed greetings from Franco Esposito and explained the research that went into writing the various chapters.
